Kalunga XR is a project born from an artistic collaboration between two artists: Luanda Carneiro Jacoel and Bianca Turner. It brings together both artist’s research intertwined, based on Luanda’s Kalunga long term project, and Bianca’s artistic investigation where she explores the notion of the archive as an imperialist imposition, the expansion of time – space through the use of audiovisual resources and video projection in relation to the body. Both artists are together at the Manifest Project – residence which seeks to engage with diverse artists for whom the topic of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people has a special interest or motivation. By organizing residencies in Budapest/Zsennye, Lisbon and Copenhagen – The Artistic Journey – the Project seeks to empower artists to approach the subject, and to re-imagine the perspectives and the history of the transatlantic trade of enslaved people on the European continent and its existing cultural traces. The selected artists traveled to three cities to create art that promotes a creative look into our past collective memory. Along the Artistic Journey, artists and creators were required and encouraged to utilize new media technologies and foster personal development.
